Children's Clothing Ministry at First Baptist Church, Athens

Last night, I received an email through www.athenscommunityconnection.com from a young woman who has just moved to Athens from Florida. She is a single mother of three, all of whom will be entering AISD schools and be needing uniforms. She explained that her circumstances have left her with no means by which to purchase these for the kids. As I told her, it is my feeling that moving is stressful for all members of a family - particularly young children and that these little ones shouldn't have to start school feeling out of place because they don't have the proper attire. Then, I turned to our Facebook Friends and explained the situation. Literally, within two minutes I had begun receiving offers of clothing and/or suggestions of non-profits to contact.

ATHENS, you continue to make me proud!! I can't begin to tell you how it makes my heart sing to know that there are still caring, loving, individuals out there who want nothing more than to help others.

I've reached back out to the young woman from Florida but as of yet, have not heard back from her. Just in case you know of someone in a similar situation, please let me pass on a few ideas shared by our Facebook Friends . . .

First Baptist Church manages a Children's Clothing Ministry out of a building known as The Greenhouse. Located just behind the FBC Recreational Outreach Center, the ministry was established in 1999 to provide clothes for children from birth to sixth grade. Included are uniforms for AISD students. At the end of the spring semester, each Athens school campus has a uniform drive to collect uniforms that students have outgrown. Volunteers go through the clothes to sort them and get them ready for distribution in August, near back-to-school time. In addition to many household items, the Athens Thrift Store often receives donations of used school uniforms. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis and sizes vary. The thrift store is a very unique way to support local non-profits. You see, all profits after expenses are divided between non-profits regularly. By supporting them, you're supporting many programs in the community.

Again, thank you to everyone who answered my call for help last night and this morning! I have no doubt that this woman will continue to be made welcome in our town and she and her children will quickly become active members of the community!
