Where did summer vacation go???

I don’t have school-aged children at home so I didn’t realize that school starts back TOMORROW in Athens. Not only that, kids will now have classes for only 4 days each week. I suppose what Heraclitus said is true – “Change is the only constant in life.” I remember starting school after Labor Day and attending only from 8am until 3pm. Then, there was the period in Texas history when year-round school was actually considered. It all hurts my head. Next thing you know, we’ll be talking about the metric system mess again.
Kids, I’m sorry your summer vacation gets shorter and shorter. Let’s hope that having event-filled 3-day weekends will make up for it! In the meantime, for those of us who aren’t in school, here are the local events we’ve been alerted to for the week of August 4 – 10, 2019:
Aug. 4 BACK TO SCHOOL!

Aug. 4 Small Group Hangout

The Spring has it's newest Small Group. They will meet at The Boathouse on Lake Athens after the 9:30 service.
Aug. 5 There is HOPE Recovery Weekly Meeting
Host: Sand Springs Baptist Church
A 12-step program for any addiction, recovery is available. We will be putting GOD FIRST so that he can change us from the Inside - Out. No matter what you are dealing with in life, There Is HOPE.
Aug. 6 Athens Kiwanis Club Weekly Meeting

Athens Kiwanis is a group of dedicated hard working individuals who raise funds to support youth projects and programs in Athens.
Aug. 6 Carter Bloodcare Blood Drive
Hosts: Walmart Athens - E Tyler St and Carter Bloodcare
Help to ensure that blood is available to those patients who need it most. Stop by the Carter Bloodcare Blood Mobile every other Tuesday at the Walmart Supercenter in Athens to make your regular donation!!
Aug. 6 Athens Masonic Lodge #165 Weekly Meeting
Host: Athens Masonic Lodge #165
The Athens Masonic Lodge meets every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a monthly business meeting occurring on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday, the Alzheimer's Coalition of Henderson County offers an opportunity for respite to those who are caring for a loved one with Dementia. Aug. 8 The Bulb Hunter
Host: Henderson County Master Gardener
As part of the Henderson County Master Gardeners’ Summer Series, Chris Wiesinger will be presenting “The Bulb Hunter” on Thursday, August 8, at 6:00 pm at the Senior Citizens Center, 3344 TX Hwy 31, Athens. Chris is the owner of Southern Bulb Company near Tyler, Tx, where he farms and sells bulbs, most of which he has collected throughout the South. He travels nationally as a frequent speaker to nursery groups, garden clubs, cemetery preservation organizations, and small business associations. He and his company have been featured in the New York Times, Southern Living, and House and Garden. Wiesinger is coauthor (with Cherie Foster Colburn) of “Heirloom Bulbs for Today”. Chris will be giving his presentation about bulbs. He will also be selling his book, “ The Bulb Hunter” and will also be selling his bulbs. Host: Keep Athens Beautiful
Keep Athens Beautiful Shoot Out sponsored by Argon Medical Devices will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the 5H Shooting Sports in Frankston, TX. The Shoot Out is a target game designed to simulate field shooting. On a Sporting Clay Course, shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that duplicate the flight path of game birds, such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots.
