Summer is heating up and so are the activities in Athens! This week, we’d like to remind everyone of the 1st Annual Athens Comic-Con to be held this coming Saturday, July 13th at The Texan - A Landmark Venue. Cosplayers from around the state will converge in full costume and vendors will be on hand as well. Let’s make this a tremendous event for years to come!!!
Here’s a look at local activities planned for week of July 7 – 13, 2019:
July 08 - 11: TVCC – Athens Driver’s Ed Course
Trinity Valley Community College
Driving time and simulator may be scheduled outside class times on Fridays and Saturdays.
July 08- 12: YES! Company Summer Theater Camp
Henderson County Performing Arts Center
Ages - 10-15 Cost - $125* ($25 discount for each additional sibling)
Led by Candy Williams, theatre teacher at Athens Preparatory Academy. Students will learn a collection of monologues and small duet scenes along with a short musical number all in the format of a professional audition. Students should bring a sack lunch. The Athens City Council meets in Regular Session on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Annex, 501 N. Pinkerton St., Athens, Texas (*). The agenda for each meeting will be posted in advance at www.athenstx.gov. Contact the City Council by emailing council@athenstx.gov. (*) Location of meeting may vary. It is suggested that the location be confirmed through the City of Athens website or Facebook page prior to attending.

Almost every child grows up with a piggy bank and is used to depositing coins into it for future spending. However, can this alone help your children the value of money and how to properly manage it? Join with us each Tuesday in July as we navigate the world of finance. Presented by Gateway to American Opportunities (a regional literacy initiative in partnership with A Circle of Ten, Inc.) Children ages 5 - 11 will learn good saving habits, and will learn how to look for value in their future purchases.

We will have a "Canning Series" going on July 9th, 16th and 23rd here at the Arboretum. If you want to feel self-sufficient, nostalgic and have a sense of self- gratification this is for you! There will be groups of 4, so bring 3 friends with you. There is a limit of 16 participants per class. You will each go home with your canned creation. It will be another fun evening for the ladies! The Athens Masonic Lodge meets every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a monthly business meeting occurring on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

A unique program designed to bring children and rescue horses together. The Library and the Doris Day Equine Center (located at Black Beauty Ranch) have teamed up together for children to read to horses.
July 10: Athens Chamber of Commerce Monthly Membership Luncheon
Athens Country Club
Join the members of the Athens Chamber of Commerce for their monthly membership luncheon and meeting. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at noon. Sponsored monthly by local businesses, during the luncheon awards will be presented for Large Business of the Month, Small Business of the Month, and Community Connection. During the school year, a Teacher of the Month will also be honored.

We are humbled and honored to have our local Heroes of the community of Athens and the surrounding area. We will be set up at the Judicial Complex (across the street from the library) this Thursday to bring joy to the faces of our children. Come shake their hand, and check out their vehicles this Thursday 10:00 AM to 12 PM!! Kona Ice and The Pork Commander will be there to serve up tasty treats!

3 P’s in a Vine
Come join us for Bring Your Own Meat (BYOM) Night at 3 P's in a Vine. All you have to do is call to reserve your table with a $10 deposit per person (which is refunded), bring your own meat and drink wine July 13th.
