Summer is officially here! Can you believe that it actually SNOWED in Colorado earlier in the week? And here I am, impressed that we haven’t really had any days over 100 yet! Go figure!
Here are the events that we’ve learned about for the week of June 23 – 30, 2019:
June 24 – 28: Kickin’ It! Soccer Camp
AGES: 6 - 11 (mornings) 12 - 16 (afternoons) We are excited to offer Soccer Camp this summer. Camp will be led by ACPA Soccer Coach Ryan Mansfield and players from the ACPA Soccer Team. This camp will teach the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, and shooting as well as ball control. Camp is open to boys and girls. We will participate in fun and challenging drills and games to build up your soccer skills and confidence on an doff the field. Please bring soccer ball, cleats, or tennis shoes and shin guards. June 24 – 28: Dinosaur Stomp!
AGES: 5 - 9 This camp is for all those curious paleontologists out there. Kids will learn about the great prehistorics and the clues they have left behind. If your hatchling is roarin' for a great time . . . this is the one to attend! June 24 – 28: Diva Dance Camp
AGES: 6 - 12 This is a brand new camp for us this year! Do not miss out on a wonderful opportunity, a great week of dancing, and being a part of Diva Dance Camp! We will learn a variety of different dance styles, work on dance technique, learn several different dance combos, and so much more! Our instructor is the Assistant Choreographers/Recruiter of the TVCC Cardettes! Previous dance training is NOT required. Come get your Diva on! June 24 – 28: Space Jam
AGES: 5 - 10 Who doesn't love learning about space? Kids love to learn about start, astronauts, rockets and planets! This will get them even more excited about the world we live in with fun space crafts, games and activities. * Make an edibel model of the moon phases * Create constellations * Create a 3D Solar System * Make Moon Sand and Galaxy Slime * Galaxy Painting * Make and launch Bottle Rockets and much more! June 24: Athens City Council Meeting
Athens City Hall Annex, 501 N. Pinkerton, Athens, TX
The Athens City Council meets in Regular Session on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Annex, 501 N. June 24: There is HOPE Recovery
A 12-step program for any addiction, recovery is available. We will be putting GOD FIRST so that he can change us from the Inside - Out. No matter what you are dealing with in life, There Is HOPE
June 25: Baby Story Time
Join Ms. Lynn for basic sign language, songs, fine motor skills board books, finger puppet plays, and social interaction. NOTE: Due to the popularity of this activity, there are now two sessions offered - one at 10:30 a.m. and another at 11:30 a.m. Each class is approximately 30 minutes in length.
June 25: Athens Kiwanis Club
Athens Kiwanis is a group of dedicated hard working individuals who raise funds to support youth projects and programs in Athens.
June 25: Blood Drive
Help to ensure that blood is available to those patients who need it most. Stop by the Carter Bloodcare Blood Mobile every other Tuesday at the Walmart Supercenter in Athens to make your regular donation!!
June 25: Athens Masonic Lodge #165 Weekly Meeting
The Athens Masonic Lodge meets every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a monthly business meeting occurring on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
June 25: Square Dance Lessons

The Henderson County Library and Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch are partnering up to bring you a once in a lifetime program, Manes and Tales! June 26: Weekly Faith Family Feast
Join us for a family style dinner then pick which small group Bible study you want to get in on from 6:30-7:30pm. Verse by Verse Bible study, The Daniel Plan or Financial Peace. There’s also a group for every age from Babies to College age! You are not gonna want to miss it! Suggested donation of $3/person with no more than $10/family.
June 27 and 28: Preschool Story Time
Ages 2 to Pre-K are invited to join Ms. Bobbie's class for an interactive storytime and a craft as we explore books as works of art while incorporating early literacy development skills. Classes are weekly on Thursday and Friday unless otherwise announced

June 27: Preserving the Harvest
As part of the Henderson County Master Gardeners’ Summer Series, Carolyn Tyler will be presenting “Preserving the Harvest” on Thursday, June 27, at 6:00 pm at the Senior Citizens Center, 3344 TX Hwy 31, Athens. This will be a hands-on public participation presentation that will cover food preparation, making freezer jam, and tips for canning. Carolyn is our our County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health. This presentation is free and open to the public, but RESERVATIONS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Please contact the Extension offices at 903-675-6130, or CarolynTyler@ag.tamu.org, or LoraTomlinson at 903-681-5577 or tomlinsonlora@gmail.com, for reservations, to be sure we have ample supplies, so everyone participating takes home a jar of jam.
June 28 – 29: Rush Herrington 1st Annual Memorial Barrel Race
1st Annual Rush Herrington Memorial Barrel Race!! June 28-29 in Athens at the Henderson County Regional Fair Park. This is going to be an amazing barrel race in honor of a man that truly loved the sport of rodeo and the agricultural way of life. Rush passed away January 7, 2019. He was a founding member of the Anderson County Youth Livestock Association and served as President for 40+ years. He was a gold member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and a National Finals Rodeo qualifier in 1974 in steer wrestling. Rush served on the Brushy Creek Water Board and the Federal Department of Agriculture Board. He was a reserve deputy for Anderson County and served in the National Guard Reserve. He was also a member of Brushy Creek United Methodist Church were he served as a chairman and headed up the Methodist Men's Breakfast. The money made off this barrel race will go to the Rush Herrington Memorial Scholarship Fund so that every year we can award a scholarship to the youth that has the same respect for rodeo and agriculture that Pawpaw did.
June 29: Athens TX Farmer’s Market
Join us for local produce, products, and community. In addition to amazing locally sourced only produce, we will have activities and education for children as well as education for adults too!
June 29th: Women’s Fellowship
Ladies!!! It is time!!! We are changing our fellowship days to every fifth Saturday! Please bring easy finger foods to share. Can’t wait!!
June 29th: People Power Opening Reception
New Art Show "People Power" opening June 29 from 5 to 7 PM. Free refreshments, meet the artists, see fabulous new art works by local artists, vote for your favorite in the People's Choice Award.
June 29th: Summer Concert Series: Ally Venable Band with Full Circle Rising
Ally Venable Band will be ROCKING The Texan starting at 8pm. Full Circle Rising will be starting out the show at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30.
About this Event: The Texan is excited to have Ally Venable Band with Full Circle Rising opening the show. The show starts at 7pm with Ally Venable Band going on stage at 8pm. This intense ROCK Show is the first of our Summer Concert Series at The Texan. Food Trucks, plenty of room to dance, and BYOB. Parking is available in the city parking lot or around the square!
June 30: Small Group Hangout
Sand Springs Baptist has it's newest Small Group. They will meet at The Boathouse on Lake Athens after the 9:30 service.
